Our Story
In 1973, Gene Antley’s father and his two brother-in-laws bought out Earl Dukes of Duke’s BBQ in Orangeburg, South Carolina. Dukes BBQ grew so big and so fast, and it was working here that Gene was able to learn the ins and outs of the BBQ business. The line at Duke’s BBQ was always so long that people were being turned away regularly…So in 1998, Gene and his three brothers, Allen, Jerry, and Ricky, opened Antley’s BBQ on the other side of town in Orangeburg.
Gene was a running back for the South Carolina Gamecocks in the early 1970s, and he stayed in touch with many of his teammates. Back in his football-playing days, he used to take his football buddies to Orangeburg to eat at Duke’s. They loved the food so much that they all kept saying, “Gene, you needed to open a BBQ restaurant in Columbia!” …And that’s how Palmetto Pig BBQ came to be.
In 2002, Gene leased and eventually bought the building where the restaurant still operates today. Everything cooked at Palmetto Pig BBQ is made from scratch – homemade – using the exact same recipes that are used at Antley’s and Duke’s BBQ. Gene’s business partner, Becky Headden, helped with the restaurant for many years and now lives in Colorado. She visits as often as she can! Gene loves meeting new people and welcoming people in to enjoy the delicous food.
